Terry M. Stroup, 34 of Neville, was wearing her seatbelt but suffered a "suspected minor injury" Pennsylvania State Police wrote in an updated release on Dec. 12. She was taken to Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center in Camp Hill for an evaluation.
The crash happened at the intersection of Newville and Oakville roads in North Newton Township at 8:50 a.m. on Dec. 12, PSP Trooper Megan Frazer detailed in the initial release.
The Deitch Bus Company's 2016 Chevrolet school bus had six students from the Big Spring School District onboard when Stroup drove through a stop sign and struck Heather L. Gray, 31 of Newville's 2019 Nissan Rogue near the driver's rear side tire, PSP detailed in the updated release.
Gray had a child in her vehicle. Both Gray and the child were properly restrained, but they too suffered "suspected minor injuries" so they were taken by Shippensburg EMS to WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, according to the police.
Her Rogue suffered "disabling damage" and her front airbag was deployed, PSP wrote in the release. It was towed from the scene by Hippensteel Towing.
Five of the six children on the school bus were taken to Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center with injuries ranging from mild to moderate, according to state police.
In total, eight people from both vehicles were taken to area hospitals. The extent of their injuries is unknown, but Trooper Frazer noted that "some are transported for precautionary reasons."
The roads remain closed in the area as of 11 a.m. with PSP on the scene. "Fire police are not permitting anyone through the barricades.," Frazer said. The road appears to have reopened as of 2 p.m.
Daily Voice has reached out to the school district for a statement or comment and Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Guarente released the following reading in part:
"As a result, four students have been transported to a local hospital for checks and care; there are no major injuries reported at this time. The students' families were immediately contacted, and administrative support has been focused on those directly impacted. "
Camera footage from the school bus was reviewed "before, during, and after the crash," PSP explained. Stroup was cited for "duties at a stop sign," the police said although court documents had yet to be filed as of 5 p.m.
In addition to PSP, the school district, the bus company, Friendship Hose Co. 1, Shippensburg EMS, Hippensteel Towing, Fire Police, PennDOT, a Forensic Service Unit, and a Crash Reconstruction Unit were all called to the scene.
